2024 Grand Tour of Georgia
April 1 - November 15, 2024
The history of mural painting can be traced back to over 12,000 years ago in the form of cave paintings and have been found on every continent. Murals are significant because of their ability to give us a look back as well as a glimpse into the future. They serve as a mark of our existence and showcase the time the mural was created.
The word mural has its origins in the Latin language. It comes from the word “murus” which translates to “wall.” Today, murals can be defined as any piece of artwork that is created by directly working on a wall, ceiling or generally any flat surface. The use of murals as communicative works of art was popularized between the years 1920 and 1970. Many murals were painted on public buildings to spread social, advertising, and political messages.
Today, murals are used to express freedom and forge a relationship between art, advertising, and history. There are many different types of mural paintings with the art being for anyone and anywhere. Some mural artists prefer abstract paintings while others specialize in more realistic work.
Mural art and street art will continue to find acceptance within our communities. Artists of all styles and talents continue to grow and blaze their own path. Mural painting can be done in a variety of styles, ranging from traditional to contemporary. It is safe to say that they will continue to highlight social, political, advertising, and artistic messages.
The 2024 Grand Tour of Georgia will highlight murals throughout the state of Georgia. Some new, others old, some promoting businesses, while others are works of art in their own right.
The Tour can be completed anytime between April 1st and November 15th.
